Learn More About Stink Bugs

Pest name: Stink bugs

Scientific name: Acrosternum hilare

Signs of an Infestation: Stink bugs are typically found in gardens, yards, and fields. Stink bugs themselves may be seen crawling around windows or walls, or on plants outside your home. They also emit a distinct odor when they’re disturbed or crushed; this odor is often described as smelling like cilantro, coriander, or burning rubber. Other signs include clusters of small yellow spots on leaves that indicate egg sacs.

Characteristics and general information: Adult stink bugs typically measure between 5-5/8 to 7/8 inches in length and vary in color from light brown to green depending on species and age. Stink bugs have large shields on their backs that give them their name. Most species have triangular shapes on their shields with scalloped edges. They can fly but don't do so often; instead, they travel by walking or hitchhiking on cars and other objects.

Stink bugs feed mainly on fruits and vegetables but also consume flowers and other plant matter. They reproduce by laying eggs directly onto host plants; the eggs hatch into nymphs which then mature into adults within 4-6 weeks, depending on temperature and climate conditions. They hibernate over winter months in large groups in places such as hollow trees, under rocks, and inside buildings near warm air vents – making them especially troublesome during springtime months when they re-emerge from hibernation seeking food sources.

Preventative Measures

The key to keeping your home free of stink bugs is prevention – making sure they can't get inside in the first place. Here are some tips from our experts on how best to prevent these pests from entering your space:

  • Seal any cracks or crevices around windows and doors with a silicone caulk; this will help keep out stink bugs and other insects.
  • Install tight-fitting screens on all window and door openings; make sure they fit snugly against the frames and are free of holes or tears.
  • Make sure exterior lights are covered so as not to attract bugs; alternatively, consider switching from outdoor lighting to motion sensor lights which won’t draw insect attention.
  • Remove any piles of leaves or debris near your home which can provide shelter for pests; this may also involve cutting back vegetation that’s close by, such as trees or shrubs.
  • Keep an eye on garden plants for signs of egg sacs; if found, take steps to remove them quickly before they hatch into nymphs which then mature into adults within 4-6 weeks, depending on temperature and climate conditions
