Anobiid Beetles

Pest Name: Anobiid Beetle or Anobiid Beetles
Scientific Name: Family Anobiidae
Signs of an Infestation: A series of round exit holes, approximately 1/16” – 1/6” in diameter. Frass, which is very fine, gritty, sawdust-like material may accumulate directly outside the exit holes.
Characteristics and General Information: Over 2200 species of Anobiidae exist throughout the world. Approximately 260 are known to infest structural timber, lumber and manufactured wood products in the US.
Anobiid Beetles have long, oval shaped bodies. Their color ranges from dark-brown to blackish-brown. However, the adult beetles are not what actually causes the damage to wood. Exit holes are created when the adult beetle matures and exits from the wood. Initially, eggs are deposited on wood in cracks and small holes. The eggs hatch into larvae and live inside the wood for 3-5 years. Later they pupate. Eventually, they exit as an adult.
Control Measures: Exposed wood is thoroughly treated with borates. Commonly this is in decks and barns.
Prevention: They prefer wood with a moisture content of 13% to 30%. Therefore, low moisture conditions with proper ventilation is important. So is promptly correcting moisture conditions. As a result, this prevents anobiid beetles from becoming active. Preventative treatments may also be performed in areas of high concern.
